Overview of Partial Classes in Visual Basic .NET

Diagram of Partial Classes in Visual Basic .NET Incomplete Classes are an element of VB.NET that is utilized all over, however theres very little expounded on it. This may be on the grounds that there are not a great deal of clear engineer applications for it yet. The essential use is standing out ASP.NET and VB.NET arrangements are made in Visual Studio where its one of those highlights that is typically covered up. A halfway class is basically a class definition that is part into more than one physical record. Incomplete classes dont have any kind of effect to the compiler since all the documents that make up a class are just converged into a solitary element for the compiler. Since the classes are simply consolidated and ordered, you cannot blend dialects. That is, you cannot have one incomplete class in C# and another in VB. You cannot traverse congregations with incomplete classes either. They all must be in a similar get together. This is utilized a great deal by Visual Studio itself, particularly in site pages where it is a key idea in code behind documents. Well perceive how this functions in a Visual Studio, yet understanding what changed in Visual Studio 2005 when it was presented is a decent beginning stage. In Visual Studio 2003, the shrouded code for a Windows application was all in an area called a Region stamped Windows Form Designer produced code. Yet, it was still all there in a similar document and it was anything but difficult to view, and change, the code in the Region. The entirety of the code is accessible to your application in .NET. Be that as it may, since some of it is code that you ought to never meddle with, it was kept in that shrouded Region. (Districts can in any case be utilized for your own code, however Visual Studio doesnt use them any longer.) In Visual Studio 2005 (Framework 2.0), Microsoft did around something very similar, however they concealed the code in a better place: a fractional class in a different document. You can see this at the base of the delineation underneath: Snap Here to show the illustrationClick the Back catch on your program to return One of the punctuation contrasts between Visual Basic and C# right presently is that C# necessitates that every halfway class be qualified with the watchword Partial however VB doesn't. Your fundamental structure in VB.NET doesnt have any exceptional qualifiers. Be that as it may, the default class explanation for a vacant Windows application resembles this utilizing C#: open halfway class Form1 : Form Microsofts structure decisions on things like this are intriguing. At the point when Paul Vick, Microsofts VB creator, expounded on this plan decision in his blog Panopticon Central, the discussion about it in the remarks continued for pages and pages. Lets perceive how this functions with genuine code on the following page. On the past page, the idea of incomplete classes was clarified. We convert a solitary class into two fractional classes on this page. Heres a model class with one technique and one property in a VB.NET venture Open Class CombinedClass    Private m_Property1 As String    Public Sub New(ByVal Value As String)       m_Property1 Value    End Sub    Public Sub Method1()       MessageBox.Show(m_Property1)    End Sub    Property Property1() As String       Get          Return m_Property1       End Get       Set(ByVal esteem As String)          m_Property1 esteem       End Set    End Property End Class This class can be called (for instance, in the Click occasion code for a Button object) with the code: Diminish ClassInstance As New _    CombinedClass(About Visual Basic Partial Classes) ClassInstance.Method1() We can isolate the properties and techniques for the class into various physical records by adding two new class documents to the venture. Name the primary physical document Partial.methods.vb and name the second one Partial.properties.vb. The physical record names must be extraordinary however the incomplete class names will be the equivalent so Visual Basic can blend them when the code is arranged. It is anything but a language structure prerequisite, yet most developers are following the model in Visual Studio of utilizing spotted names for these classes. For instance, Visual Studio utilizes the default name Form1.Designer.vb for the fractional class for a Windows structure. Make sure to include the Partial catchphrase for each class and change the inward class name (not the document name) to a similar name. I utilized the inner class name: PartialClass. The delineation beneath shows the entirety of the code for the model and the code in real life. Snap Here to show the illustrationClick the Back catch on your program to return Visual Studio conceals fractional classes, for example, Form1.Designer.vb. On the following page, we figure out how to do that with the halfway classes we just made. The past pages clarify the idea of fractional classes and tell the best way to code them. Be that as it may, Microsoft utilizes one more stunt with the incomplete classes produced by Visual Studio. One reason for utilizing them is to isolate application rationale from (UI) code. In an enormous undertaking, these two sorts of code may even be made by various groups. In the event that theyre in various records, they can be made and refreshed with much greater adaptability. Be that as it may, Microsoft goes one more advance and conceals the halfway code in Solution Explorer also. Assume we needed to shroud the strategies and properties halfway classes in this venture? Theres a way, yet its not evident and Microsoft doesnt disclose to you how. One reason you dont see the utilization of fractional classes suggested by Microsoft is that its not so much bolstered very well in Visual Studio yet. To conceal the Partial.methods.vb and Partial.properties.vb classes that we just made, for instance, requires an adjustment in the vbproj document. This is a XML document that isnt even showed in Solution Explorer. You can discover it with Windows Explorer alongside your different documents. A vbproj document is appeared in the representation underneath. Snap Here to show the illustrationClick the Back catch on your program to return The way would do this is to include a root class that is totally vacant (just the Class header and End Class articulation are left) and make both of our fractional classes reliant on it. So include another class named PartialClassRoot.vb and again change the interior name to PartialClass to coordinate the initial two. This time, I have not utilized the Partial catchphrase just to coordinate the manner in which Visual Studio does it. Heres where a little information on XML will come in helpful. Since this record should be refreshed physically, you need to get the XML linguistic structure right. You can alter the record in any ASCII word processor - Notepad works fine and dandy - or in a XML editorial manager. For reasons unknown, you have an incredible one in Visual Studio and that is what is appeared in the representation underneath. In any case, you cannot alter the vbproj record while youre altering the task its in. So close the venture and open just the vbproj record. You should see the record showed in the alter window as appeared in the outline underneath. (Note the Compile components for each class. DependentUpon sub-components must be included precisely as appeared in the representation underneath. This outline was made in VB 2005 however it has been tried in VB 2008 also.) Snap Here to show the illustrationClick the Back catch on your program to return For a large number of us, its most likely enough to realize that incomplete classes are there, to make sure we comprehend what they are when were attempting to find a bug later on. For enormous and complex frameworks advancement, they could be a minor act of God since they can help sort out code in manners that would have been unimaginable previously. (You can likewise have incomplete structures and halfway interfaces!) But a few people have presumed that Microsoft created them only for inside reasons - to make their code age work better. Creator Paul Kimmel even ventured to such an extreme as to recommend that Microsoft really made incomplete classes to bring down their expenses by making it simpler to re-appropriate improvement work the world over. Possibly. Its the sort of thing they may do.

It gives a basic examination of the appraisal procedure; formal and casual evaluations; use of legitimate, moral, and socio-political components to the procedure; and the job and capacity of the nursing calling to the hypothesis and practice of appraisal. The instance of Janet, an epileptic patient, is the focal point of the evaluation in this article. We will compose a custom exposition test on Intelligent Essay on Learning Disabilities †Psychological Well-being or then again any comparable point just for you Request Now 1. Procedure of Assessment Evaluation is the initial step to diagnosing mental disarranges. An emotional wellness appraisal is a multifaceted scholarly action including the theory plan of someone in particular, which fills in as the reason for choosing information to be gathered and deciphered, just as for reaching determinations. A full clinical appraisal goes inseparably with emotional well-being appraisal, which includes assessing and estimating deliberately such factors in a person as mental, natural, and social to evaluate a requirement for a potential mental treatment (Elder, Evans, and Nizette 2013). Psychological well-being nursing keeps up its cornerstone in an exact and deliberate biopsychosocial and otherworldly evaluation. The underlying procedure of appraisal learns whether the individual has a psychological wellness issue; distinguishes the issue; the most suitable treatment; and whether there is existing together wellbeing or social issues requiring consideration or treatment. In this manner, it is important to complete a far reaching evaluation to decide the person’s analysis and build up an appropriate treatment plan. As indicated by mental experts, mental scatters might be ordered by personal conduct standards just as examples of suspected and feeling. By understanding characterization frameworks, psychological well-being attendants empower proficient and viable correspondence with other wellbeing orders and add to examine and in choosing viable intercessions (Elder et al. 2013; Basavanthappa 2007). Evaluation is critical as the customer must be surveyed comprehensively, in which an applicable data about his/her life, conduct, and emotions must get coordinated. Accomplishment of ideal degree of wellbeing for the customer is the focal point of such consideration (Shives 2008). Hopp and Rittenmeyer (2012) accentuated that it is critical to do mental notes while doing an appraisal since this would give some insight with respect to how the individual is feeling. Thus, one must glance at the appearance, conduct, discourse, passionate state, and thinking about the individual being surveyed. In any case, investigating these zones isn't sufficient since confusion or mistaken presumptions may happen. Or maybe, it is important to consider the specific circumstance, setting, social standards, and convictions for the individual being surveyed (Pender, Murdaugh, and Parsons 2006). Needs-drove appraisal will permit the attendant to put more accentuation on discovering arrangements (Coffey and Hannigan 2003). 2. Hazard Assessment A noteworthy job is played by chance evaluation and the board in the act of emotional well-being attendants and multi-disciplinary groups. These dangers incorporate danger/threat to others just as self-hurt, among others. In spite of the nearness of dangers be that as it may, an equalization must be considered between the requirements of every individual help client (customer) and people’s security and insurance. A further accentuation is set on scarcity of data and absence of information about such dangers, consequently prompting ‘clinical gambling’ that can additionally bring about disasters (Cordall 2009). It is important to give center around improved consistency in applying hazard evaluation and the executives procedures, thinking about their focal job in the act of psychological wellness. As a matter of fact, chance appraisal and the executives experienced certain turns of events, including the territory/s to be comprehended about hazard evaluation; its clea rness and what must be surveyed; methodology advancements in nursing hazard; recommendations; and inclined enquiry-based exercises. Henceforth, hazard language must be normalized and disentangled, which requires improving lucidity in the fundamental jobs of the idea (Cordall 2009). At the point when one talks about hazard appraisal in psychological wellness administrations, he/she manages the more extensive chance (danger) of an occasion or conduct (result). The result is the main zone of enthusiasm since it is normally associated with a degree of seriousness, which could be related with the signs of risk/sickness. Significant respect is given to the effect of such seriousness on the grounds that both a high result hazard with low effect and a low result chance with high effect can occur (Kettles and Woods 2009). A valuable method to consider the way through which occasions happen is a lot of equivalent to researchers’ prescient capacity to test various hazard appraisals, which is additionally a helpful method to assess the accomplishment of results. Possibility tables permit an assessment of right forecasts and mistake rates, and are thus a superb way to introduce these outcomes. Then again, the seriousness of conduct alludes to the degree of power of hazard happening, and might be delegated mellow, moderate, or extreme (Kettles and Woods 2009). Clinical practice in a scope of settings includes the center component of viciousness chance appraisal. The emphasis on hazard to others in the psychological nursing wellbeing practice is that overlooking or neglecting to recognize it can leave clinical faculty ill-equipped and an absence of arrangement brings about circumstances where less readiness to work with forceful and brutal patients may be felt by clinical staff. In addition, as there is a generally held consciousness of the connection between psychological sickness and viciousness, an expanding premise of hazard evaluations will be occurring in clinical, restorative, and legitimate settings (Woods, 2009). Then again, hazard to self, which may incorporate self-destructive conduct, physical and social self-disregard, and powerlessness to chance from others, should likewise be thought of. Deserving of note here are the biologic speculations of self destruction, which investigate the connection between physical disease, expanded hazard, and neuro-organic components of self destruction (Murray and Upshall 2009). 3.Case Study The Purpose of Assessment and its Potential Impact for Promoting Inclusion The individual who is the focal point of this contextual investigation is an epileptic patient named Janet. She is 48 years of age, delicate (little and short), and is inside the consideration office since her medicine was not following up on her. She was conceded for her wellbeing. The above has not just related the idea of the patient’s sickness yet in addition introduced other data that might be assembled so as to lead an exact appraisal that will help an exact conclusion. The clinical work force responsible for Janet were sympathetic and merciful of her condition. The wellbeing faculty took additional consideration to comprehend the customer in emergency, considering her related dread and trouble level, particularly if her earlier assistance experience had been troublesome and additionally in the event that she experienced necessary treatment. The psychological wellness nurture played the significant job in the presentation of an exact and continuous evaluation on Janet. A

Remembering Life - Creating Wholeness from Loss

Remembering Life - Creating Wholeness from Loss It’s Memorial Day and I am remembering. Remembering those who have passed in various ways throughout the years. Those who have touched me personally. Remembering, etymologically, is a putting back together of parts. When someone is torn from us, we naturally perform this reconstruction through our thoughts. The most recent lost in my life was my friend Nikk, who died unexpectedly two weeks ago. He was 33. His family has chosen not to request an autopsy, so we don’t know how he died, whether it was an aneurysm or a tumor or a heart attack. I have a compulsion to understand, to know the reason. His family, understandably, believes that the final result is the same so why put their son’s body through invasive procedures? What’s important is not how it happened but how we choose to remember. And so we remember. The music, the love, the funny things he said and did. The contribution he made. In Memory of Nikk C. These are the sorts of things we are called upon to piece together about all our loved ones who have passed on. I remember these things about my father who died of pneumonia at age 57; my college roommate who was killed in a car accident in the prime of her life; and my grandmother who lived to a ripe old age. What of my high school classmate who was hit by a bus? Or the professor who was going to be my thesis advisor until he was in an accident on his way home one night? We experience painful loss, and in the same transaction we are gifted with memories that repair the rift. What will we choose to remember? And what can we learn from those memories about how best to live our lives? I asked some of Nikk’s friends what message they thought he would want to send to the world. Some words and phrases that came up were were joy, spontaneity, embracing who you are, connecting closely with others, believing in others even when they don’t believe in themselves, and being a force for positivity, inspiration and love. Recently he had completed a huge web development project for the Rainbird Foundation, whose mission is to end child abuse. He definitely made his mark. The pieces come together. I had a brush with possible death when I was in a car accident four weeks ago, and I have been called to consider what people will remember about me. I want to be thought of for the creativity I have put into the world, for the ways I have expanded and progressed other people’s lives, for my spirit and my contributions. I hope that many people’s lives have been made better because I have touched them. Celebrating Life The phrase “Memorial Service” has rather somber connotations, and so Nikk’s family gathered people together for a “Celebration of Life.” Whatever the title, what we all did there was scroll through our memories. We experienced joy, we connected with each other, and we appreciated all that Nikk had created. We say “Rest in Peace,” and we want the souls of our loved ones to be at peace if that is our belief. I believe that with that phrase we are seeking peace and wholeness in ourselves as we adjust to life without the person who passed. I also believe it’s the remembering, and the inspiration that springs from it, that will get us there.

The Effects Of Stress And Trauma On The Human Psyche

The impact of stress and trauma upon the human psyche continues to challenge and inform researchers and clinicians who work in this field. Internal responses to trauma often precede development of defenses and coping mechanisms which are normal reactions to abnormal or recurring traumatic situations or experiences (American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The impact and imprint of trauma on the human psyche can lead to a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in some adults and children (Barlow, 2014; Courtois Ford, 2013; Soloman Siegel, 2003; Yarhouse, Butman McRay, 2005). This paper will explore PTSD as it is understood within the field of psychology and neuroscience beginning with a brief look its historical development in the American Psychiatric Associations’ Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to the most current DSM-5th edition. The epidemiology and etiology of PTSD will focus primarily on the adult population with some attention g iven to the implications for children. Therapeutic goals, assessment tools, and recommended treatment approaches for the three phases of treatment will be summarized. Remarks will be offered on research findings on treatment outcomes. Observations from current data and emerging trends in PTSD will conclude this work. The important issue at this point was that he and Katherine had deciphered the pyramid and now possessed the information required to negotiate Peter’s release. And not a moment too soon. The glowing arms on Langdon’s Mickey Mouse watch indicated that they had less than ten minutes to spare. â€Å"Make the call,† Katherine said, motioning to a phone on the wall in the kitchen. â€Å"Now!† The sudden arrival of this moment startled Langdon, and he found himself hesitating. â€Å"Are we sure about this?† â€Å"I most certainly am.† â€Å"I’m not telling him anything until we know Peter is safe.† â€Å"Of course not. You remember the number, right?† Langdon nodded and made his way over to the kitchen phone. He lifted the receiver and dialed the man’s cell-phone number. Katherine came over and placed her head next to his so she could listen in. As the line began to ring, Langdon prepared himself for the eerie whisper of the man who had tricked him earlier tonight. Finally, the call connected. There was no greeting, though. No voice. Only the sound of breathing at the other end. Langdon waited and then finally spoke. â€Å"I have the information you want, but if you want it, you’ll have to give us Peter.† â€Å"Who is this?† a woman’s voice replied. Langdon jumped. â€Å"Robert Langdon,† he said reflexively. â€Å"Who are you?† For an instant he thought he must have dialed incorrectly. â€Å"Your name is Langdon?† The woman sounded surprised. â€Å"There’s someone here asking for you.† What? â€Å"I’m sorry, who is this?† â€Å"Officer Paige Montgomery with Preferred Security.† Her voice seemed shaky. â€Å"Maybe you can help us with this. About an hour ago, my partner responded to a 911 call in Kalorama Heights . . . a possible hostage situation. I lost all contact with her, and so I called backup and came to check the residence. We found my partner dead in the backyard. The home owner was gone, and so we broke in. A cell phone was ringing on the hall table, and I–† â€Å"You’re inside?† Langdon demanded. â€Å"Yes, and the 911 tip . . . was a good one,† the woman stammered. â€Å"Sorry if I sound rattled, but my partner’s dead, and we found a man being held here against his will. He’s in bad shape, and we’re working on him now. He’s been asking for two people–one named Langdon and one named Katherine.† â€Å"That’s my brother!† Katherine blurted into the receiver, pressing her head closer to Langdon’s. â€Å"I made the 911 call! Is he okay?!† â€Å"Actually, ma’am, he’s . . .† The woman’s voice cracked. â€Å"He’s in bad shape. He’s missing his right hand . . .† â€Å"Please,† Katherine urged. â€Å"I want to talk to him!† â€Å"They’re working on him at the moment. He’s in and out of consciousness. If you’re anywhere in the area, you should get over here. He obviously wants to see you.† â€Å"We’re about six minutes away!† Katherine said. â€Å"Then I suggest you hurry.† There was a muffled noise in the background, and the woman then returned to the line. â€Å"Sorry, it looks like I’m needed. I’ll speak to you when you arrive.† The line went dead. CHAPTER 91 Inside Cathedral College, Langdon and Katherine bounded up the basement stairs and hurried down a darkened hallway looking for a front exit. No longer did they hear the sounds of helicopter blades overhead, and Langdon felt hopeful they could slip out unseen and find their way up to Kalorama Heights to see Peter. They found him. He’s alive. Thirty seconds earlier, when they’d hung up with the female security guard, Katherine had hurriedly hoisted the steaming pyramid and capstone out of the water. The pyramid was still dripping when she lowered it into Langdon’s leather bag. Now he could feel the heat radiating through the leather. Excitement over Peter’s discovery had temporarily trumped any further reflection on the capstone’s glowing message–Eight Franklin Square– but there would be time for that once they got to Peter. As they rounded the corner at the top of the stairs, Katherine stopped short and pointed into a sitting room across the hall. Through the bay window, Langdon could see a sleek black helicopter sitting silent on the lawn. A lone pilot stood beside it, facing away from them and talking on his radio. There was also a black Escalade with tinted windows parked nearby. Staying in the shadows, Langdon and Katherine moved into the sitting room, and peered out the window to see if they could see the rest of the field team. Thankfully, the huge lawn outside the National Cathedral was empty. â€Å"They must be inside the cathedral,† Langdon said. â€Å"They’re not,† a deep voice said behind them. Langdon and Katherine wheeled around to see who had spoken. In the doorway of the sitting room, two black-clad figures aimed laser-sighted rifles at them. Langdon could see a glowing red dot dancing on his chest. â€Å"Nice to see you again, Professor,† said a familiar raspy voice. The agents parted, and the tiny form of Director Sato sliced effortlessly through, crossing the sitting room and stopping directly in front of Langdon. â€Å"You’ve made some exceedingly poor choices tonight.† â€Å"The police found Peter Solomon,† Langdon declared forcefully. â€Å"He’s in bad shape, but he’ll live. It’s over.† If Sato was surprised Peter had been found, she did not show it. Her eyes were unflinching as she walked to Langdon and stopped only inches away. â€Å"Professor, I can assure you, this is nowhere near over. And if the police are now involved, it has only become more serious. As I told you earlier this evening, this is an extremely delicate situation. You never should have run away with that pyramid.† â€Å"Ma’am,† Katherine blurted, â€Å"I need to see my brother. You can have the pyramid, but you must let–â€Å" â€Å"I must?† Sato demanded, spinning to Katherine. â€Å"Ms. Solomon, I assume?† She stared at Katherine with fire in her eyes and then turned back to Langdon. â€Å"Put the leather bag on the table.† Langdon glanced down at the pair of laser sights on his chest. He set the leather bag on the coffee table. An agent approached cautiously, unzipped the bag, and pulled the two sides apart. A little puff of trapped steam billowed up out of the bag. He aimed his light inside, stared for a long, puzzled moment, and then nodded to Sato. Sato walked over and peered into the bag. The wet pyramid and capstone glistened in the beam of the flashlight. Sato crouched down, looking very closely at the golden capstone, which Langdon realized she had only seen in X-ray. â€Å"The inscription,† Sato demanded. â€Å"Does it mean anything to you? `The secret hides within The Order’?† â€Å"We’re not sure, ma’am.† â€Å"Why is the pyramid steaming hot?† â€Å"We submerged it in boiling water,† Katherine said without hesitation. â€Å"It was part of the process of deciphering the code. We’ll tell you everything, but please let us go see my brother. He’s been through–â€Å" â€Å"You boiled the pyramid?† Sato demanded. â€Å"Turn off the flashlight,† Katherine said. â€Å"Look at the capstone. You can probably still see.† The agent flicked off his light, and Sato knelt down before the capstone. Even from where Langdon was standing, he could see that the text on the capstone was still glowing slightly. â€Å"Eight Franklin Square?† Sato said, sounding amazed. â€Å"Yes, ma’am. That text was written with an incandescent lacquer or something. The thirty-third degree was actually–â€Å" â€Å"And the address?† Sato demanded. â€Å"Is this what this guy wants?† â€Å"Yes,† Langdon said. â€Å"He believes the pyramid is a map that will tell him the location of a great treasure–the key to unlocking the Ancient Mysteries.† Sato looked again at the capstone, her expression one of disbelief. â€Å"Tell me,† she said, fear creeping into her voice, â€Å"have you contacted this man yet? Have you already given him this address?† â€Å"We tried.† Langdon explained what had happened when they called the man’s cell phone. Sato listened, running her tongue over her yellow teeth as he spoke. Despite looking ready to erupt with anger over the situation, she turned to one of her agents and spoke in a restrained whisper. â€Å"Send him in. He’s in the SUV.† The agent nodded and spoke into his transceiver. â€Å"Send who in?† Langdon said. â€Å"The only person who has any hope of fixing the goddamn mess you made!† â€Å"What mess?† Langdon fired back. â€Å"Now that Peter is safe, everything is–â€Å" â€Å"For Christ’s sake!† Sato exploded. â€Å"This is not about Peter! I tried to tell you that at the Capitol Building, Professor, but you chose to work against me rather than with me! Now you’ve made an ungodly mess! When you destroyed your cell phone, which, by the way, we were tracking, you cut off your communication with this man. And this address you uncovered–whatever the hell it is–this address was our one chance to catch this lunatic. I needed you to play his game, to provide him with this address so we would know where the hell to catch him!† Before Langdon could reply, Sato directed the remainder of her wrath at Katherine. â€Å"And you, Ms. Solomon! You knew where this maniac lived? Why didn’t you tell me? You sent a rent-a-cop to this man’s house? Don’t you see you’ve ruined any chance we had of catching him there? I’m glad your brother is safe, but let me tell you this, we are facing a crisis tonight whose ramifications far outreach your family. They will be felt all around the world. The man who took your brother has enormous power, and we need to catch him immediately.† As she finished her tirade, the tall, elegant silhouette of Warren Bellamy emerged from the shadows and stepped into the sitting room. He looked rumpled, bruised, and shaken . . . like he’d been through hell. â€Å"Warren!† Langdon stood up. â€Å"Are you okay?† â€Å"No,† he replied. â€Å"Not really.† â€Å"Did you hear? Peter is safe!† Bellamy nodded, looking dazed, as if nothing mattered anymore. â€Å"Yes, I just heard your conversation. I’m glad.† â€Å"Warren, what the hell is going on?† Sato intervened. â€Å"You boys can catch up in a minute. Right now, Mr. Bellamy is going to reach out to this lunatic and communicate with him. Just like he’s been doing all night.† Langdon felt lost. â€Å"Bellamy hasn’t been communicating with this guy tonight! This guy doesn’t even know Bellamy is involved!† Sato turned to Bellamy and raised her eyebrows. Bellamy sighed. â€Å"Robert, I’m afraid I haven’t been entirely honest with you this evening.† Langdon could only stare. â€Å"I thought I was doing the right thing . . .† Bellamy said, looking frightened. â€Å"Well,† Sato said, â€Å"now you will do the right thing . . . and we’d all better pray to God it works.† As if to substantiate Sato’s portentous tone, the mantel clock began chiming the hour. Sato took out a Ziploc bag of items and tossed it to Bellamy. â€Å"Here’s your stuff. Does your cell phone take photos?† â€Å"Yes, ma’am.† â€Å"Good. Hold up the capstone.† The message Mal’akh had just received was from his contact–Warren Bellamy–the Mason he had sent to the Capitol Building earlier tonight to assist Robert Langdon. Bellamy, like Langdon, wanted Peter Solomon back alive and had assured Mal’akh he would help Langdon acquire and decipher the pyramid. All night, Mal’akh had been receiving e-mail updates, which had been automatically forwarded to his cell phone. This should be interesting, Mal’akh thought, opening the message. From: Warren Bellamy got separated from langdon but finally have info you demanded. proof attached. call for missing piece. –wb –one attachment (jpeg)– Call for missing piece? Mal’akh wondered, opening the attachment. The attachment was a photo. When Mal’akh saw it, he gasped out loud, and he could feel his heart start pounding with excitement. He was looking at a close-up of a tiny golden pyramid. The legendary capstone! The ornate engraving on the face carried a promising message: The secret hides within The Order. Beneath the inscription, Mal’akh now saw something that stunned him. The capstone seemed to be glowing. In disbelief, he stared at the faintly radiant text and realized that the legend was literally true: The Masonic Pyramid transforms itself to reveal its secret to the worthy. How this magical transformation had occurred, Mal’akh had no idea, and he didn’t care. The glowing text was clearly pointing to a specific location in D.C., exactly as prophesied. Franklin Square. Unfortunately, the photo of the capstone also included Warren Bellamy’s index finger, which was strategically positioned on the capstone to block out a critical piece of information. The secret hides within The Order Franklin Square Call for missing piece. Mal’akh now understood Bellamy’s meaning. The Architect of the Capitol had been cooperative all night, but now he had chosen to play a very dangerous game. CHAPTER 92 Beneath the watchful gaze of several armed CIA agents, Langdon, Katherine, and Bellamy waited with Sato in the Cathedral College sitting room. On the coffee table before them, Langdon’s leather bag was still open, the golden capstone peeking out the top. The words Eight Franklin Square had now faded away, leaving no evidence that they had ever existed. Katherine had pleaded with Sato to let her go see her brother, but Sato had simply shaken her head, eyes fixed on Bellamy’s cell phone. It sat on the coffee table and had yet to ring. Why didn’t Bellamy just tell me the truth? Langdon wondered. Apparently, the Architect had been in contact with Peter’s captor all night, reassuring him that Langdon was making progress deciphering the pyramid. It was a bluff, an attempt to buy time for Peter. In fact, Bellamy was doing all he could to interfere with anyone who threatened to unveil the pyramid’s secret. Now, however, it seemed that Bellamy had switched sides. He and Sato were now prepared to risk the pyramid’s secret in hopes of catching this man. â€Å"Take your hands off me!† shouted an elderly voice in the hall. â€Å"I’m blind, not inept! I know my way through the college!† Dean Galloway was still protesting loudly as a CIA agent manhandled him into the sitting room and forced him into one of the chairs. â€Å"Who’s here?† Galloway demanded, his blank eyes staring dead ahead. â€Å"It sounds like a lot of you. How many do you need to detain an old man? Really now!† â€Å"There are seven of us,† Sato declared. â€Å"Including Robert Langdon, Katherine Solomon, and your Masonic brother Warren Bellamy.† Galloway slumped, all his bluster gone. â€Å"We’re okay,† Langdon said. â€Å"And we just heard that Peter is safe. He’s in bad shape, but the police are with him.† â€Å"Thank heavens,† Galloway said. â€Å"And the–â€Å" A loud rattling caused everyone in the room to jump. It was Bellamy’s cell phone vibrating against the coffee table. Everyone fell silent. â€Å"Okay, Mr. Bellamy,† Sato said. â€Å"Don’t blow it. You know the stakes.† Bellamy took a deep breath and exhaled. Then he reached down and pressed the speakerphone button to connect the call. â€Å"Bellamy here,† he said, speaking loudly toward the phone on the coffee table. The voice that crackled back through the speaker was familiar, an airy whisper. It sounded like he was calling from a hands-free speakerphone inside a car. â€Å"It’s past midnight, Mr. Bellamy. I was about to put Peter out of his misery.† There was an uneasy silence in the room. â€Å"Let me talk to him.† â€Å"Impossible,† the man replied. â€Å"We’re driving. He’s tied up in the trunk.† Langdon and Katherine exchanged looks and then began shaking their heads at everyone. He’s bluffing! He no longer has Peter! Sato motioned for Bellamy to keep pressing. â€Å"I want proof that Peter’s alive,† Bellamy said. â€Å"I’m not giving you the rest of–â€Å" â€Å"Your Worshipful Master needs a doctor. Don’t waste time with negotiations. Tell me the street number on Franklin Square, and I’ll bring Peter to you there.† â€Å"I told you, I want–â€Å" â€Å"Now!† the man exploded. â€Å"Or I will pull over and Peter Solomon dies this instant!† â€Å"You listen to me,† Bellamy said forcefully. â€Å"If you want the rest of the address, you’ll play by my rules. Meet me at Franklin Square. Once you deliver Peter alive, I’ll tell you the number of the building.† â€Å"How do I know you won’t bring the authorities?† â€Å"Because I can’t risk double-crossing you. Peter’s life is not the only card you hold. I know what’s really at stake tonight.† â€Å"You do realize,† the man on the phone said, â€Å"that if I sense so much as a hint of anyone other than you at Franklin Square, I will keep driving, and you will never find even a trace of Peter Solomon. And of course . . . that will be the least of your worries.† â€Å"I’ll come alone,† Bellamy replied somberly. â€Å"When you turn over Peter, I’ll give you everything you need.† â€Å"Center of the square,† the man said. â€Å"It will take me at least twenty minutes to get there. I suggest you wait for me as long as it takes.† The line went dead. Instantly, the room sprang to life. Sato began shouting orders. Several field agents grabbed their radios and headed for the door. â€Å"Move! Move!† In the chaos, Langdon looked to Bellamy for some kind of explanation as to what was actually going on tonight, but the older man was already being hurried out the door. â€Å"I need to see my brother!† Katherine shouted. â€Å"You have to let us go!† Sato walked over to Katherine. â€Å"I don’t have to do anything, Ms. Solomon. Is that clear?† Katherine stood her ground and looked desperately into Sato’s small eyes. â€Å"Ms. Solomon, my top priority is apprehending the man at Franklin Square, and you will sit here with one of my men until I accomplish that task. Then, and only then, will we deal with your brother.† â€Å"You’re missing the point,† Katherine said. â€Å"I know exactly where this man lives! It’s literally five minutes up the road in Kalorama Heights, and there will be evidence there that will help you! Besides, you said you want to keep this quiet. Who knows what Peter will start telling the authorities once he’s stabilized.† Sato pursed her lips, apparently registering Katherine’s point. Outside, the chopper blades began winding up. Sato frowned and then turned to one of her men. â€Å"Hartmann, you take the Escalade. Transport Ms. Solomon and Mr. Langdon to Kalorama Heights. Peter Solomon is not to speak to anyone. Is that understood?† â€Å"Yes, ma’am,† the agent said. â€Å"Call me when you get there. Tell me what you find. And don’t let these two out of your sight.† Agent Hartmann gave a quick nod, pulled out the Escalade keys, and headed for the door. Katherine was right behind him. Sato turned to Langdon. â€Å"I’ll see you shortly, Professor. I know you think I’m the enemy, but I can assure you that’s not the case. Get to Peter at once. This isn’t over yet.† Off to one side of Langdon, Dean Galloway was sitting quietly at the coffee table. His hands had found the stone pyramid, which was still sitting in Langdon’s open leather bag on the table in front of him. The old man was running his hands over the stone’s warm surface. Langdon said, â€Å"Father, are you coming to see Peter?† â€Å"I’d just slow you down.† Galloway removed his hands from the bag and zipped it up around the pyramid. â€Å"I’ll stay right here and pray for Peter’s recovery. We can all speak later. But when you show Peter the pyramid, would you please tell him something for me?† â€Å"Of course.† Langdon hoisted the bag onto his shoulder. â€Å"Tell him this.† Galloway cleared his throat. â€Å"The Masonic Pyramid has always kept her secret . . . sincerely.† â€Å"I don’t understand.† The old man winked. â€Å"Just tell Peter that. He will understand.† With that, Dean Galloway bowed his head and began praying. Perplexed, Langdon left him there and hurried outside. Katherine was already in the front seat of the SUV giving the agent directions. Langdon climbed in back and had barely closed the door before the giant vehicle was rocketing across the lawn, racing northward to Kalorama Heights. Dave Barrys Complete Guide To Guys Essay Example For Students

Dave Barrys Complete Guide To Guys Essay Wait, are you telling me that Dave Barrys Complete Guide to Guys addresses womens issues? If womens issues include understanding why guys spit, scratch themselves, and give each other noogies, well then this book certainly addresses them!As for addressing the whole bit about a patriarchal world history, the subjugation of women, and accused responsibility for the Fall of Man, well, you might as well forget it. Dave Barry might not make you feel better about the stature of women in todays world or the future of the human species, but hopefully you can say this: youre not a guy. Dave Barrys book reminds me a lot of an episode of Seinfield: its all about nothing. It tells the reader what guys are thinking(nothing) and what their deal is(nothing). While it does pretty much, well, nothing to help understand women or help women understand, the one thing it does do is hold true to the manufacturers guarantee: you WILL laugh. You will not only laugh, but you will laugh hard. You will laugh hysterically, obnoxiously hard. You will want to share Dave Barrys insight on the male species with everyone you know and every stranger you meet, particularly so if they are women. Barrys book speaks little about the real reasons as to why males do the things they do and more about the fact that they are just scumbags and idiots. According to Barry, people make being male sound like a very important activity, as opposed to what it primarily consists of, namely, possessing a set of minor and frequently unreliable organs(xi). You will become convinced that the title should not be Complete Guide to Guys, but More Reasons Why Women Are The Better Sex. In fact, Barry himself seems to support the latter idea through his discussion of the Punch Reflex, the Noogie Gene, scientific reasons as to why guys act like jerks, the hidden truth of the Space Shuttle program, and standards. Yes, guys are just mindless idiots who like things that go, Brrrrrrmmmmmmmmm! I suppose he would know, though: he is a guy. It is a well-known fact that our world history is dominated by a tyrannical patriarchy in which the majority of women have been forgotten. Somehow, according to Barry, it is the men who have been forgotten. Guys have played an important role in history, but this role has not been given the attention it deserves, because nobody wrote it down(9). Yet, in Barrys fifteen-page chapter recounting the entire history of the world, the male role in the subjugation, victimization, and abuse of women was entirely forgotten. In truth, women- period- were forgotten. What Barry d id tell us, however, were actually little known facts about women in history. Prehistoric women actually took care of the children and gathered roots, only to throw them away later(the roots, that is). Women didnt exist in Ancient Egypt. Women in the Middle Ages only complained that their kids kept getting the Plague. The only women in the Renaissance were statues. God only knows what happened with the women during the Protestant Reformation; the guys were out fishing when that happened. The only participation women had in the Age of Exploration was telling their husbands that they should stop and ask for directions, as well as almost being victims of head-on collisions with Christopher Columbus. Women in colonial America were actually men dressed up as French milkmaids who threw cows into the Boston Harbor. Women disappeared, again, during the Industrial Revolution. The only woman in the Modern Era- or, at least, Dave Barrys Modern Era- was Sherryl Gingrich, a reader who sent him a newspaper article about family men in their forties who decided to hurl themselves off a ski-jump in a canoe. Yes, I do believe Dave Barry is right: it is the men who have been forgotten in history. In all seriousness, while Barry is intending to only to make a mockery of mens history, he is also making a mockery of womens history by disregarding her very presence. Barrys recounting of history is reflective of the world today, as well as history itself. Barry forgot women in his telling of history, just as so many actual history books have. He deals with the issue of a forgotten sex by mirroring our patriarchal world history: he simply forgets it. While his efforts as a historian are in vain, Barry is quite successful as a teacher of sociology. While he writes fairly little on womens socialization techniques, he speaks at great length of the methods of male socialization. They are a hot topic for Barry and, surprisingly enough, he actually offers some very valid information and pos sible reasons behind male behavior. His explanations of male socialization should be considered in conjunction with his explanations of the male biology, seeing as much of male socialization is directly affected- and primarily caused- by his biological nature. There are powerful underlying biological reasons why guys act the way they do, as opposed to acting like human beings(43). By and large, Barry accredits male behavior to hormonal influences(i.e. sexual hormones). Im not saying that women dont think about sex also. Im saying that women are capable, for at least brief periods of time, of not thinking about sex, and that most guys are not(31). As well as their ability to be non-sexual, Barry also accredits women with the ability to be logical and sensible through his discussion of the effects of testosterone on male behavior. Barry uses this male biology in combination with gender-focused media ploys, namely, toys and machinery. Both male and female socialization, according to Ba rry, are influenced by stereotypical gender-focused toys, which imply a certain type of gender behavior. Males are introduced to the ideas of power and dominance at a very young age through toys and the media, whereas these same things teach females a stereotypical duty to be caretakers and gentle. It is He-Man versus Bake-A-Cake. Barry exemplified the effects of the gender-based commercial marketing on male and female socialization through an incident at Burger King with his son. Id see a table of little girls, and theyd be eating and talking, just like miniature humans. Whereas my son and his friends seemed to have some kind of nervous-system linkage between their mouths and their hands, so that they could not chew without punchingId look over at the table of little girls, whod be chatting and thoughtfully passing each other the napkins, and I would wonder how we ever permitted my gender to get control of, for example, the government(52-53).Barry uses a very humorous situation to show the honest validity of the effects that society has on the interaction styles of both sexes. Socialization is greatly affected by impressions made by society. It must be acknowledged, however, that these impressions are made by adults who themselves are victims of gender-behavior generalizations that have been passed down through history. .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .postImageUrl , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:hover , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:visited , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:active { border:0!important; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:active , .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685 .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uaafdd9ade786ed4cf32251bfb0108685:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Boycott of an eight year old girl against her teacher Essay There is little else of Dave Barrys book that can be compared to the variety of womens issues broached during this semester. While his book is undoubtedly hysterical, it is not a viable resource that would show the issues that women have dealt with and continue to deal with in todays world. He quite rarely mentions the trials, tribulations, and successes of the female sex, making the only argument that their greatest problem has been male idiocy. He makes a mockery of the male sex, offering the blanket statement that women are smarter, more reasonable, and all-around better human beings. He makes this statement by dealing only with stupid human tricks that males have engaged in(such as the previously mentioned canoe-skiing). It is a book that is entirely worth reading, but it cannot- and should not- be considered a serious source from which to gain actual evidence of womens issues. It is a book that sheds a very humorous, and sometimes honest, light on the male species, but only on t he male species. It is the type of book that one would read after having a fight with their significant other or in the company of women. It is the type of book that makes you highly appreciate being a woman. It is the type of book that makes you happy to laugh and say: at least Im not a guy.

Basketball vs Volleyball free essay sample

Basketball vs. Volleyball Basketball and Volleyball are different and similar in many ways. This essay is going to compare and contrast these two popular sports, comparing things such as the sense of teamwork needed for both sports, and showing contrast in the aspects of them, like the number of players on each team. Basketball and Volleyball have many differences, such as how many players are on the court and how many positions are played. Basketball is played with five players on the court, all with a different position. Volleyball has 6 players and only two main positions. The positions in volleyball are the spikier and the setter and the six players on the court rotate through playing the positions. My girlfriend was the setter, but she was so much better at diving that she was deemed as the â€Å"designated Diver. † She once scored 10 points while serving in a tie breaker game and ultimately won the game for her team. We will write a custom essay sample on Basketball vs Volleyball or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Basketball positions are known as point guard, shooting guard, forward, strong forward and center. Usually one person plays only one position, but back in high school I switched between the forward, strong forward and center positions, because I could handle doing any one of them. Another difference basketball and volleyball have is the time limit they are played in, and the plays that the players run. Volleyball is played for three games. For there to be a winner, one team must win two out of three games. There is no time limit and no set plays for volleyball, the games are simply played until one team gets 25 points, but they have to win by at least two points or the game will continue until that is achieved. If it goes to the third game or the tie breaker, the score will be to 15 but still having to win by two. Basketball, on the other hand, has a much higher scoring system. The two teams play for 20 minute halves, and can score as many points as the teams possibly can in the allotted time limit. If the teams are tied in basketball at the end of the allotted time, they go into overtime, in which they play a five minute half and the team with the most points at the end wins. If the teams continue to tie, the game will continue into double overtime and onwards until one team ends the time with more points. Though they both have scoring systems, the way the points are scored is different. In basketball, you are trying to get the ball through a narrow orange hoop, either scoring 1, 2, or 3 points by doing so, depending on how far from the hoop you are. In volleyball, you are trying to serve, bump, set, and/or spike the ball over the net to make it land inbounds on the other team’s side of the floor. Volleyball players must get the ball over the net within three touches or the point will go to the other team. I mentioned that both sports score points, but that is only one of the many ways basketball and volleyball are the same. Another way is communication throughout the sport’s seasons. This action should start at the beginning of the preseason or practice with your teammates and even your coach. Without communication, volleyball players could dive onto each other, run head/full body into each other or one player could think that another player has the ball when its coming down but doesn’t get it, because they, the other player was thinking the exact same thing. Basketball on the other hand, if teammates don’t have communication, the game could turn into a four on three situation. This has happened a couple of times with me and both ended up badly. One time lending to a big dunk that put the other team ahead. So, each sport needs to communicate for the team to do well in games and in practice. Without communication with the coach in both sports, players could run into many more issues: such as themselves and others not listening, not knowing what to do, and no one being able to work with each other because of that. Another similarity that these two sports have in common is hard work and dedication. In both sports, with all the players working hard in practice, it will make the games easier and the players more aware of what is going on. With hard work in the games it will lead to more victories, which is another thing I have experienced in all my years of playing basketball. My team worked as hard as they could in both practice and games, and that season we went on to win the city league title, which happened to be my senior year in high school. Dedication for both sports shows both the players and the coaches that you want to get better, that the sport means something to you. The same is true in both sports, the harder any player works and the more passion they show, and the better the game will be for everyone. Team work and skill are the two aspects that pull the rest of the similarities together. They go together in all sports because all teams depend on each other a lot. In order for them to do well, they need to develop their individual skills and their skills with each other. Determining the amount of skill a player has and the skill of the entire team will help the coach determine if they are champions or possibly could be. Team work is one of the things I wanted to talk about last so that it would stick in your head. This is a main thing in all sports and that will help determine if teams will go on to win against better teams. Basketball and Volleyball are similar in more ways than I could have thought of at first. Now that this essay was written, I know more about the similarities within these two sports. The differences were more interesting to me because I always thought volleyball wasn’t that difficult of a sport. I didn’t really know anything about volleyball until I had decided to choose this topic to write about. I now know that sports have similarities and differences down to even the smallest facts such as those in and with both Basketball and Volleyball.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Cognitive Psychology Essay Example

Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Cognitive Psychology Essay Example Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Cognitive Psychology Essay Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Cognitive Psychology Essay Running head: COGNITION AND REALITY Raymond Summers Psychology 202 Cynda Hopper Change Blindness: The Proof of Ignorance Cognitive psychology is not so much difficult to see in action, but rather it is difficult to understand why. This did not stop cognitive psychologists Daniel Levin and Daniel Simons. They proposed that when a person meets another object, if that object is not important enough to the person, that same person will in fact pay less attention to it. They performed two experiments involving young and old subjects with a wide range of intellect. In the experiment one of the psychologists, Levin, would ask for directions from a subject (Daniel J. Simons and Daniel T. Levin 1997). Some time after the directions were asked the other psychologists, Simons, would rudely interrupt the discussion by carrying a door between the subject and Levin. During this interruption Simons would switch places with Levin and continue carrying on the discussion. Approximately 50% of the subjects noticed the difference even though both psychologists wore different attire, were of different build, had different hair cuts, and had noticeably different voices (Daniel J. Simons and Daniel T. Levin 1997). The majority of subjects that noticed a difference were roughly the same age as the psychologists. They performed this same experiment again only this time they dressed as construction workers, both different costumes. This time less than half of the subjects noticed the difference. They theorized that the younger subjects are more likely to associate them to there social group and are therefore more aware of the psychologist. The older subjects, however, most likely decided that the psychologists are merely students asking for directions so therefore are less aware of the psychologist. This is the first experiment to prove that change blindness can occur outside of the laboratory (Daniel J. Simons and Daniel T. Levin 1997). Since then scientist have correlated this test with real life situations, for example when your friend gets a hair cut and even though you seem them everyday, you still fail to notice. This among many others is just one example of the incredible situation of change blindness. Reference Daniel J. Simons and Daniel T. Levin. (1997). Change Blindness. In [PDF]64 65. Research Paper proposal & annotated bibliography

Paper & annotated bibliography - Research Proposal Example I will carry out extensive literary analysis in order to discover the ideas that various authors front in their own discourses. Numerous authors and researchers have investigated the cultural manifestation and impacts of the war in the American society. I will therefore investigate and use three of the most cited works thereby drawing conclusion based on their ideologies of the authors. The three books include In discussing the history of the Vietnam War, Anderson explains the influence that such effects had on the American culture. The author explains the extensive use of radio among other media in enhancing the spread of the culture both in the United States and throughout the world. According to the book, the war led to systematic change of culture as captured by various media. The author draws his references from poetry, films, memoirs and journalism among others at the time. He explains that the works often conveyed three unique thematic features including home, wound and the voice. The three were significant in constructing the post war culture. American became increasingly patriotic with a heightening desire to protect their rights while developing comfortable, safe and secure homes for themselves. This validates the flamboyant experienced at the time as the society became conscious of the effects of war. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the cultural effects of the war and is therefore a vital resource in my research. Just as the title suggests, the encyclopedia provides an in-depth analysis of the cultural effects of the Vietnam War in the United States. As such, the encyclopedia is a phenomenal piece that discusses the importance of the war not only to the American culture but to the global culture as well. The authors assert that the United States is a major economy, one that influences the cultural developments globally. As such, the country enhanced the

Political socialization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Political socialization - Essay Example The changes are not always demanded for the comforts of living. In a culture of mixed races, ethnic groups and castes it becomes demanding to survive, to expand, to initiate and to change for the benefit of the future generations. Hence it becomes very necessary to analyze the process by which political opinions are formed and take shape. If we look at the process more closely any member of the society would not be having his or her own opinion till the age of pre teen that is twelve. That is the age when one is in awe with the figures of authority in the family. Then the figures are replaced by more closer to life figures such as leaders, political figures etc. However at a later stage the person starts forming his or her opinions. The later stage the opinions start taking shape and are consolidated over a period of time. These opinions then change into matter of policies and become guiding principles of one’s life. At the same time these principles now determine the voting decisions and the capacity in which the citizen participates in the political process or the system of the country. This process of political socialization also throws light on formation of groups, parties and lobbies that come from various sections and races of the society. Political socialization creates the awareness in the people to come together and be together till the goal is achieved. With this perspective unification of various racial groups in American society needs to be observed. This holds a good deal of reference to African American people coming together. Tracing the history we observe that the Africans came as slaves to the continent. Even though they were living into deplorable conditions there was no voice and unity amongst them even after they were given the independence by the then Lincoln government, they still did not know the means to work and survive.

Study On CPU And Memory Hierarchy

Study On CPU And Memory Hierarchy CPU must have compatibility with the memory in the computer system. Memory cannot increase the speed of the processor however it can help the processor increase its performance. If the CPU doesnt get the data it requires, it would sit idle wasting CPU clock cycles that would decrease the overall throughput and execution of the processes. If data needs to be accessed to and from hard disk which is slower as compared to the main memory, more and more cycles are wasted decreasing the efficiency of the system. Conclusion- For better performance of the system, faster program execution and proper CPU utilization the compatibility between CPU and memory is required. A computer employs RAM chips of 256*8 ROM chips of 1024*8. The computer society system needs 2K byte of RAM 4KBYTE of ROM, 4 interface units. Each with 4 registers. A memory mapped I/O configuration is used. The 2 highest order bits of the address bus are connected with address 00 or RAM and 01 for ROM 10 for interface. How many RAM ROM chips are needed? Draw a memory address map. 2 kb of RAM required i.e. 21024(bytes) =2048 bytes (Since 1 kb =1024 bytes) RAM = = 8 chips; and 4kb of ROM is required i.e. 4 x 1024 = 4096 bytes Therefore ROM = = 4 chips; and There are 4 interfaces each having 4 register, So total no. of registers is 44=16 registers; Memory address map Cache Coherence- Caches allow greater performance by storing frequently used data. In multiprocessing system, each processor is provided with its own cache and they all share the same memory or address space so it is possible for more than one processor to access a data item at a time. What if one processor updates the data item without informing the other processors, inconsistencies may result and cause incorrect executions and the problem of inconsistencies is known as Cache Coherence in computing. The coherence of caches is obtained if the following conditions are met. However these read and write operations are said to be one after another and this is not possible due to memory access latency and a write by first processor may not be seen by a read from second processor if the read is made within a very small time after the write has been made. Case 1 Case 2 Processor P1 reads memory location X and then writes back to same location X while no other processor is not accessing the memory location X. Processor P1 reads and then processor P2 writes to and from same location X and currently the location would return value written by processor P2 only. Processor P1 and P2 writes to same memory location X in a sequence and currently the value returned would be decided as per the sequence. Mechanisms- Bus Snooping- In Bus Snooping each cache is connected through the same bus and it is where every CPU knows who has a copy of its cached data. So each CPU watches continually for write activity concerned with data addresses which it has cached. This assumes that all communication can be seen by all. However it is far more complex to implement. Directory Based Approach- In a directory-based system, the data being shared is placed in a common directory that preserves the coherence connecting caches. The directory acts as a filter through which the processor must ask authorization to fill an entry from the primary memory to its cache. When an entry is distorted the directory either updates or invalidates the other caches with that entry. The MESI protocol is the best suited protocol to avoid cache coherence, where M stands for MODIFIED, E stands for EXCLUSIVE, S stands for SHARED and I stands for INVALID. Write Back Cache- Cache uses two approaches to write data back to main memory. Write Through Write Back It is the simplest one in which all write all operations are made to the main memory as well as to cache; ensuring main memory is always valid. Any other CPU- cache module can monitor traffic to main memory to update the data in its own cache, but always results in substantial memory traffic. It minimizes memory writes. In write back method modifications to data in the cache arent copied to the cache source until absolutely necessary. It is also known as copy back cache .In write back updates are made only in the cache. When an update occurs UPDATE bit are set associated with the slot and when the block is replaced it is checked whether the UPDATE bit is set or not. If it is set then data is written back to main memory. For Example- Intel processors since the 80486 uses back caching. Problem with this kind of implementation is that performance improvement comes with a slight threat that data may be vanished if the system crashes and more complex circuitry. Onboard Cache- Cache is a part of multi-level storage strategy which is used to increase the performance of CPU by providing a bridge in between the slower memory RAM and CPU. The cache that is the part of the CPU is known as off-board cache and the cache which is present on the motherboard is known as on-board cache. Generally L1 cache is referred as off-board and L2 is known as on-board. Sometimes L3 cache is also present on the motherboard along with L2. Now a days specific CPU vendors incorporates L2 as a part of CPU and L3 on motherboard. Implementation of Cache- In Cache, latency needs to be decreased and hit rate needs to be increased. Larger caches have better hit rates but longer latency. To address this problem, many computers use multiple levels of cache. The smaller and faster one is L1 cache built inside the CPU known as on-chip. If CPU needs data it first checks in L1; if it hits the processor proceeds at high speed. If the smaller cache misses, the next larger cache (L2) is checked, and so on, before external memory is checked. As the latency difference between main memory and the fastest cache has become larger, some processors have begun to utilize as many as three levels of on-chip cache. For Example- Intels Xeon MP Product code-named Tulsa, AMD Phenom II (2008), Intel Core i7 (2008) uses unified L3 cache. However Cache can be implemented by using Direct Mapped, Associative Mapping or Set-Associative Mapping. Virtual Memory- For the execution of programs memory required is more than what is actually present. So, the technique used to overcome this size limitation is Virtual Memory which is illusion of memory not physically present. The purpose is to allow multiple programs share same memory allowing splitting up of program into smaller pieces that can be loaded into different parts of memory whenever space can be found. Implementation of Virtual Memory- It is implemented using two techniques- one is Demand Paging and other one is Demand Segmentation. CPU generates address which is not physically present. These are the program addresses referred to as logical addresses, they dont have any existence outside the program, the actual memory addresses are known as physical addresses. These virtual addresses are mapped or interchanged to its corresponding physical address through a process known as mapping. A page table or look up table is maintained for this purpose. In Demand paging, valid-invalid bit scheme is used in which a valid-invalid bit is associated with each page. 1 for the page in memory and 0 for not present in memory. During address translation if bit in entry is 0 the page fault occurs. In virtual memory process are divided into chunks of equal size known as pages and chunks of memory in which pages are loaded are known as frames. In Demand Segmentation each row of the lookup table contains a starting address for a logical block of memory, together with the size of the block and a corresponding starting address in physical memory. Paging and Segmentation operates both the same. Problem of Fragmentation- Fixed Memory Partitioning- Operating system occupies fixed portion of main memory and partitions are created for multiple processes but not of same size, so there will be wastage of memory. In most cases the process will not acquire memory provided to it. Variable Memory Partitioning- In variables-size partitions, the memory allocated is as much it is required by process. However when processes are swapped in, small holes are created leading to problem of fragmentation. Compaction is done to solve problem, but it waste CPU time. In Virtual Memory demand paging method is implemented, in which memory is partitioned into equal chunks that are relatively small, and each process is divided into small fixed size chunks of some size. The lists of the frames that are free are maintained by the operating system. As the size of the pages and frames are same so suffer less fragmentation problem. The Memory Hierarchy The design constraints on a computers memory can be summed up by three questions: how much memory is available, how fast it is and how much it will cost? Following are the relationships between these tradeoffs- Smaller access time, greater cost per bit. Greater capacity, smaller cost per bit. Greater capacity, greater access time. Access Time Increase Transfer Rate DecreasesCPU Registers Cache Cost per/bit Decreases Capacity IncreasesRAM Magnetic Disk Figure -Memory Hierarchy Memory hierarchy helps in increasing the performance of processor, without hierarchy, faster process wont help and all time waiting on memory, It provides a large pool of memory that costs as much as the cheap storage near the bottom of the hierarchy, but that serves data to programs at the rate of the fast storage near the top of the hierarchy. It provides a faster access of data stored in the memory. If it is understand how the system moves data up and down the memory hierarchy, then application programs can be written so that data items are stored higher in the hierarchy, where the CPU can access them more quickly. Addressing modes affecting performance of system- It simplifies the memory references, produces variable length instruction format and instruction manipulates operands in memory directly. It adds convenience and flexibility to have modes of addressing, and it allows a large range of addressable memory while using a reasonable number of bits. Addressing modes make it easier to write certain type of programs such as loops that uses an index to address different entries in a table or array. For Example- Indexed Addressing. Now a days computer allows programmer accessible registers that manipulate data directly between registers.

Disadvantage of democracy Essay

The primary disadvantages of democracy are a general lack of accountability, the prospect of personal interest becoming the predominant factor in decisions, and negative financial implications. A democracy lays the power to make decisions in the hands of the majority. This, ironically, places an emphasis on both individual and group power. A group controls the decision-making process, but an influential individual can control the group. The issue with democracy, in spite of the power of the people to control the decision-making process, is that there is no sense of accountability when the group makes a decision that turns out to be a bad one. Even particularly influential individuals in the group who may have persuaded the majority to vote for what led to the bad decision is free from blame because, ultimately, everyone in the group is responsible for his or her choice. In this way democracy, although a group-oriented approach, can become very much about what individuals believe is best for themselves and not for the majority. This type of decision-making also can be very expensive and have negative financial implications. First, a considerable amount of money can be spent in persuading voters to support an idea or cause. Second, voters may embrace an idea or cause, such as lowering taxes, because it sounds ideal when, in practice, it could lead to financial disaster. Disadvantages of Democracy Making the wrong choice In a democratic country, it is the common man who has the supreme right to choose their legislature and their prevailing authorities. As per a general study, not all the people are completely conscious of the political circumstances in their nation. The common masses may not be acquainted of the political matters in their society. This may lead to common man taking an erroneous selection during election. Authorities May Lose focus As the government is bound to changes and modification after each election tenure, the authorities may function with a interim objective. Since they have to go through an election procedure after the conclusion of each tenure, they may lose focus on functioning effectively for the citizens and  instead might concentrate on winning elections. Hordes Have Influence A further disadvantage of democracy is that hordes can manipulate citizens. People may vote in support of a party under the pressure of the bulk. Constrained or influenced by the ideas of those around, an individual may not put across his/her accurate judgment. Democracy averts radicalism and encourages teamwork and synchronization. It also slows things down, stops those in authority doing what they wish regardless of the majority’s desires. Since the military incursion into the Nigerian political scene on January 15, 1966, all the woes of this country are placed on the military. Most Nigerians do not want to hear the word â€Å"military†. They see the military as synonymous with evil. But does the military symbolize evil? Colonel Muamma Gaddafi is a military officer who seized power from the Libyan Monarch in 1969. Colonel Muamma Gaddafi as a military leader, was able to transform Libya to the envy of the world so much that other nationals including Nigerians are queuing at the Libyan embassy for her visa. Under a military leadership in Libya, Nigerians are rushing to the country on a daily basis because the country has a lower inflation of 1% than that of Nigeria which is 20% and a per capita of $8,400 while Nigeria’s per capital is $50. If military regime is synonymous with evil, why are Nigerians running from a country that is under civil rule to a country which is under a military leader? Ghana, our neighbouring West African country was also transformed from a corrupt and poverty stricken nation it was, to a transparent and an accountable nation by a military officer, Flight lieutenant, John Jerry Rawlings. At the moment, Nigerians are running to live in Ghana because the country has improved tremendously in terms of economy and infrastructural development. Ghana has also attained democratic growth and stability having transited from one democratically elected government to another two times. However, let us now compare and contrast the difference between military and civil rules in Nigeria. Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. Out of the 50 years of Nigeria’s existence as an independent  nation, the military has ruled the country for 29 years. Within the 29 years the military ruled the country, 3 years were used to prosecute the Nigerian civil war, between 1967 to 1970, this means the military actually spent 26 years to rule the country. Out of the 50 years of the nation’s existence, civilians have ruled for 21 years. So, the difference between the years the military have ruled the country and those of civilians nine years. The questions one is asking are, if the military has destroyed the country within the space of 29 years as claimed by the civil leaders, can’t the civil leaders repair it within a space of 21 years? How long does it take to repair what is damaged? What has the civilian leaders be able to remedy since they have been ruling the country? Since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, we are still hearing the same old song by politicians, â€Å"You know the military have destroyed the country and you know that it is not easy to repair what has been destroyed†. I find this excuse unacceptable to the Nigerian people because something that was destroyed can be repaired. For instance, Germany, France, Austria etc were devastated during the first and second World War but today they have rebuilt to enviable status. Of all the things the military destroyed, which of them has the civilian leaders been able to put right? Some politicians who are out to deceive the poor masses will say that â€Å"the worst civilian regime is better than military regime.† But is it always true that the worst civilian regime is better than military regime? Politicians are also quick to say that â€Å"at least we can talk now that we are in a civilian regime and that we could not talk during the military administrations.† I found this argument very amusing because our mouths were not muzzled by the military during their administrations. I make bold to say that we spoke more during the military administrations than we do today because then we all saw the military as our common enemy and were united to fight against them. There were so many civil society organizations such as National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) which was headed by late Pa Adekunle Ajasin, Campaign for Democracy headed by late Dr. Beko Ransom Kuti, Civil Liberties Organization headed by former President of Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA ), Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Afenifere, the Yoruba socio- cultural group headed by late Pa Abraham Adesanya, Association of Senior Staff Union of Uni versities, headed by the INEC Chairman, Professor Atahiru Jega, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN ), headed by Chief Frank Ovie Kokori etc. These civil society groups spoke openly against the ills of the military and sent them back to the barracks. At that time too, journalists engaged in revolutionary journalism which made the press very vibrant and added impetus to the voice of the masses. During the military era, television and radio stations were mostly owned by both states and the federal governments. DAAR communications, owner of African Independent Television and Ray power Radio station and Minaj television and FM radio station which started in 1994 were the only privately owned broadcast organizations in the country, the rest belonged to both the states and federal governments. Would the governments have allowed the masses to use their media to criticize them? There is no government that allows such a thing in any part of the world. Let us assume that we did not talk during military administrations, what have we achieved since 1999 that we have been talking? Have those who claimed to be representing us both in th e State Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly ever taken our advise? We said the National Assembly should pass the Freedom of Information Bill into law, have they done it since it was introduced into the house? We said the Justice Mohammed Uwais recommendations on Electoral Reform be adopted by the National Assembly, have they adopted them? The Federal Government has earmarked #6.6 billion towards the celebration of Nigeria’s 50th anniversary, which the masses condemned in totality, yet the Federal Government is bent on wasting such amount of money on the celebration of failure. Will the States and Federal Governments ever listen to the masses? We said the huge allowances our so call representatives are receiving should be reduced, did they agree to reduce their allowances? A senator receives #45 million allowance quarterly, while each member of the House of Representatives receives #27.2 million allowance quarterly. Each senator receives #500 million constituency development allowance yearly which is not accounted for. Their salaries and other benefits are not included these allowances. Is there justification for such huge allowances considering the fact that they sit for 180 days in a year? Can we say with a sense of pride that the lives of Nigerians have improved positively since we returned to democracy in 1999? Let me make it clear that democracy is not just about having freedom to talk, it goes beyond mere talking. Democracy is about quality leadership that translates  into accelerated development and growth in all areas of human aspirations. Democracy goes beyond just having civilians in government. Any administration, be it military or civil government that cannot better or improve the lives of the people is a monumental failure. The main purpose of governance is to coordinate and harness the wealth of the people for an effective development that will enhance the standard of living of the people. Have we seen such achievements and development since 1999? Let us compare and contrast civil administrations since 1999 till date and military administrations from 1985 till 1999 when the military handed over the reins of power to civilians. We shall start this comparison with the economy. Before the civilians took over government in 1999, a 50 kg bag of rice was sold for N2,500, today it is selling for N8,000. A small bag of beans that was sold for N1,800, now sells for as much as N7,000. Is this not outrageous. Before the commencement of the Obasanjo’s regime in 1999, Nigerians were able to eat twice daily. Morning and night, which was popularly called one –zero-one. At present, most Nigerians eat once daily, which is popularly called zero – one- zero. Is this not regression? If the agricultural sector is well funded and productive, why are prices of foodstuffs on the increase? The unemployment rate has gone up drastically because many industries are closing down while some are relocating to our neighbouring countries due to lack of regular supply of electricity. The Obasanjo’s regime in 1999, inherited 3,500 megawatts of electricity from the military, today it has reduced to a mere 2,500 megawatts for a population of 150 million people. The problems of industries and other organizations that consume large quantity of electricity are compounded as a result of the high cost of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel. These products are used to power generators which provide alternative power for industries. As at the time Nigeria return to democracy in 1999, the prices of petroleum product were cheap. But before ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, who also doubled as petroleum minister, left office in 2007, he had increased the prices of these products eleven times. A litre of kerosene that cost N9.00 in 1999, now sells for N125.00. Petrol that cost N11.00 at that time, now goes for N65.00 while diesel that cost N10.00 then now sells for N120 per litre.
